Holidays Around the World

Years ago, I posted about my Winter Celebrations Scrapbook.  You can check out the post here.  Last year, I felt like we needed to condense our activities.  We were shorter on time and had a full packed curriculum that needed to be incorporated as well.  I decided to alter the booklet just a bit, but the original is still included in the resource.

I created one page passages and a place for students to draw a single snapshot of something they learned about the country or celebration.  The following countries/celebrations are included:

 

U.S.A.

Kwanzaa

Mexico

Germany

France

Sweden

Hanukkah

Each of the pages is formatted like the page below. 

There is also a separate smaller booklet with multiple questions for each of the passages and a map is also included.

I LOVE to incorporate read alouds as I introduce each country/celebration.

Regrouping Practice

I wanted to share a resource that I use year after year in my second grade classroom.  The pages can be used as a quick check, review, or even as an assessment after the skill has been taught.

The resource contains 58 pages of math problems that have a clean, simplistic design.  There are only 10 problems per page, so they shouldn't be too overwhelming for students.  I prefer to use them for morning work.  Then, I give my students immediate feedback, and they go back and correct any they had difficulty with.  I find it to be a simple, yet valuable learning tool in the classroom.

Below you can see the types of pages included in the resource.  Within the resource, you will be able to click and head to the pages you need.

 

Cinco de Mayo

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I put together this little freebie. 

I love to introduce Cinco de Mayo with a read aloud.  

My favorite is Marco's Cinco de Mayo by Lisa Bullard.  

The freebie above is a great follow up activity after reading the story.   Your students can simply color and write about Cinco de Mayo in the space provided.

Kindness in the Classroom

Wow, quite a bit of time has passed since my last post.  Thanksgiving is near and I really wanted to take the time for a quick post about kindness and giving thanks.  My little group of second graders really is a sweet group, but I have a few that struggle to get along.  I wanted to show my little ones the importance of kindness and how kindness can be contagious.  I shared with them the heartwarming video, Kindness Boomerang on YouTube.  If you haven't already seen it, it is a MUST see.  We talked about ways we can send out positive boomerangs into the world. 
 
I also created bookmarks for each of my students.  I shared one reason I am thankful for each and every one of them.  I wanted to show them a little kindness and let them know that I am thankful for them and each for different reasons.

Then, I had them write a sweet message to another student in the classroom.  They drew numbers randomly.  This was a bit harder, because most of them got the name of someone who isn't necessarily their best friend.  They had to come up with a reason why they are thankful for that person.

They also drew a picture on the back.

I also wanted to share a wonderful infographic that was shared with me by Braman Honda Miami.  They started a digital community service project about simply being kind, and how little acts of kindness can help change the world for the better!  What a wonderful message!!!  With the holidays upon us it is the perfect time to spread a little or a lot of KINDNESS!  

Word Collector

Just a quick post to share a template I'm using this year to review and practice vocabulary words.  I wanted a place my students could store their vocabulary words for easy reference throughout the year.  We already use a composition book as a spelling dictionary, so I created a tabbed divider, so the other half of the composition book could be used for storing vocabulary words.  I am thrilled at how well it is working out in the classroom!

School Snapshots

Sadly, summer is nearly over and it's time to get back into school mode.  With school now on my mind, I decided to update one of my favorite resources.  It's a great resource for students to reflect on special days and events during the school year.  I love to save all the pages that my students work on and add them to their writing portfolios at the end of the year.
